Norway in a nutshell - day trip
Norway in a Nutshell® is considered one of the world's most beautiful day trips, and is a perfect day trip from Stalheim. Departure is at a reasonable time after breakfast, and return well before dinner.
You can take this round trip either way, one way has the fjord tour from Gudvangen to Aurland in the afternoon, while the other way has the fjord in the morning. Which one suits you best depends on the weather forecast, among other things.
Start by bus from Stalheim
If you want to take the fjord tour in the afternoon, you first take a bus from Stalheim to Voss, from Voss there is a train to Myrdal, at Myrdal you then change to the world-famous Flåm Railway. The train ride from Myrdal down to Flåm goes through some of the wildest nature in western Norway; it is not without reason that the Flåm Railway has become one of our most popular tourist attractions.
After a one and a half hour stop in Flåm with time for lunch etc., the trip continues by ferry out of the Aurlandsfjord and into the narrow Nærøyfjord, which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List, to Gudvangen.
In Gudvangen, buses are waiting to take you back to Stalheim. Previously, you could drive down the famous and infamous Stalheimskleiva which was considered the tour's "grand finale," but since it was closed in 2020, everyone has instead taken a trip to our terrace at Stalheim Hotel . You will be back in Stalheim at approx. 18:30. In the summer of 2023, Kleiva will finally open again as a pedestrian and cycle path. Then you can walk down and up the entire Kleiva.
In the opposite direction, the trip starts by bus from Stalheim to Gudvangen. In Gudvangen, you board the ferry to Flåm. From Flåm, the trip continues to Myrdal and then to Voss by train. From Voss, the bus returns to Stalheim. Check with the reception for updated timetables and travel tips.
